USA – DoD cancels ARH-70 Helicopter

October 20, 2008

The ARH (Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter) is a program by the United States Army to replace around 375 Bell Textron OH-58D “Kiowa Warrior” helicopters.

Bell Helicopter Textron initially won the ARH competition with the ARH-70, a militarized version of its highly successful 407 single-engine commercial helicopter. But in July the Army announced that the contract with Bell-Textron was then more than 40 percent over cost, triggering a program review.

As a result of the review, DoD notified Congress that it would not re-certify the program because “the fundamental cost and schedule basis underlying award of the ARH is no longer valid.”

The U.S. Army have to find a valid alternative to replace its aging fleet of scout helicopters. As an interim measure, the complete fleet of Kiowas will receive further upgrades.
